Introducing FAHS

June 8, 2007*

Recognizing that one size does not fit all, in 2004, the District 623 Educational Planning Advisory Committee (EPAC) recommended an expansion of alternative educational programming beyond [the RAHS] Connections [Program]. The district formed a task force, which studied the needs of students who are at risk of not graduating or leaving high school.

In fall 2007, their work will lead to a new option for students: the Fairview Alternative High School (FAHS).

Located in the Fairview Community Center, FAHS will offer some 80 students a smaller, more personal and flexible setting in which to learn. With its less traditional environment, FAHS can help students focus on the steps that lead to success after graduation whether they pursue a career immediately or attend college.

"For several years, we have been noticing more and more students in need of some kind of alternative education," says Jerry Etesse, FAHS principal. Currently 150 students in grades 11 and 12 are missing three or more credits for graduation. "What we needed to provide is another way to find success."

FAHS staff will work closely with high school counselors and teachers to identify students in grades 10-12 who are not yet on the path toward completing the credits and requirements for their high school diploma. FAHS students will attend classes in math, science, English, social studies, fine arts, and physical education. They will still be able to take part in activities at RAHS, as well as in vocational educational classes. FAHS teachers also will develop hands-on learning opportunities for students, including special projects, internships, and job training options.

As a setting for FAHS, the Fairview Community Center fit well, says Sally Latimer, former assistant superintendent. "We wanted geographically to have the school be as much a school as possible, with classrooms, gym space, and a lunchroom," she says. Over the summer, the district will slightly modify rooms on Fairview's second floor to prepare for the fall opening of FAHS.

"It's a true alternative setting," says Etesse. But that doesn't mean students will find classes easier. The same standards apply, and students are expected to demonstrate continuous improvement. When they complete credits and pass state tests, they receive a diploma from Roseville Area Schools. "As an alternative high school, we are part of a continuum," says Etesse. "We are expanding options for students."
