Grades 7-8 Music Program
Band & Orchestra
Instrumentalists are a part of a large group which meets every other day for 40 minutes. During this time, students are encouraged to use the technique they have learned and practiced on their own in the playing of pieces at an appropriate difficulty level. Mini-concerts and school concerts are scheduled for times appropriate for the current year (usually 2 concerts/year). Each student also receives a 30 minute lesson per week in which they are guided toward new techniques and taught new skills. Many students are scheduled for lessons as an ensemble where they can learn skill-level ensemble techniques. Responsibility and discipline are considred essential as regular individual practice is required outside of the school day.

General Music
General Music is music appreciation and how music is a part of every day life. Through games and classroom activities, the recognition of notes and music signs prepares the student for Piano Lab where basic keyboard skills are taught. Students get to know the basic sounds and capabilities of the keyboard, and experiment with their song writing skills. Students also enjoy a series of classes on guitar. Chords and styles of strumming are taught with simple but famiiliar songs. Through various media, different styles of music are experienced from the classical to the contemporary. Well known pieces of music from all styles and eras will be introduced for enjoyment and recognition.
