PCS Green Team
During the 2008-2009 school year Parkview (the third school in the District to adopt the program) began participating in Ramsey County's and Washington County's Food-to-Hogs Program under the direction of Dan Schoepke, Sr. Environmental Specialist with the Washington County Department of Public Health and Environment, and supported by MEHA. "The Minnesota Environmental Health Association (MEHA) is an organization of public health professionals in government and industry working to improve the living and working conditions in homes, businesses, and the protection of the environment. ... The mission of the Minnesota Environmental Health Association is to provide professional development to its members, and education and information to the community, which will maintain and enhance public health and the environment in Minnesota."
This PDF offers a look at the what the program is, how it works, and its benefits.

Green Team Program Recycling Progress Report for 2009-10
As Kermit the Frog says “it isn’t easy being green"…but at Parkview we are trying to make it a whole lot easier- read more for a Green Team update.
This year at Parkview we are transitioning themes from "Serve the Earth, Save the Planet” to “Many Hands to Save our Lands.” This is a two year focus on our AESOP principles of Affirming Diversity and Environmental Stewardship. Our theme aligns with the Green Team's mission to continue reducing, reusing, and recycling waste at Parkview.
As we continue on with our school year please continue to help support our green team recycling program.
In the summer of 2008 a team was formed to look at ways of improving our recycling efficiency and reducing waste at Parkview. The Green Team began as a joint effort between staff at Parkview and staff from Ramsey County Environmental Health. In the fall of 2008 the 6-8 grade team piloted a recycling program using a color coded recycling system. Blue barrels were used for recycling paper, green for cans and bottles, and gray for garbage. The pilot was successful and we expanded and trained the rest of the school. We now have recycling centers located throughout the building to facilitate waste reduction.
In January 2009 we introduced the Food to Hogs program (food waste recycling). In this program students sort out their trash from food waste and recycle uneaten food by providing it to a pig farm. Staff at Parkview have worked hard to train students in this program and we have seen excitement and commitment from students.
We have experienced many benefits from our recycling program so far at Parkview. Some of these include, student ownership and leadership in recycling, staff engagement in the process, and modeling our AESOP values of environmental stewardship, service to our community, and ownership as responsible citizens. We have also been saving money (approximately $300 a month) by reducing our trash pickups and increasing our recycling pickups.
As we continue to improve this year we are looking for new ways to recycle and new ideas for reducing waste. One discussion item we will be looking at is the concept of Pre-Cycling- thinking of waste reduction before purchasing. If you have an interesting idea for the Green Team to explore please contact Kathy Farrell or Jake Von De Linde. Also look for Green Team updates and ideas throughout this year in the PCS Update. PCS School Forest
In the past Parkview has teamed with the University of Minnesota School of Forestry and as a result of the collaboration was designated a Minnesota School Forest Site. University of Minnesota staff and student interns worked with PCS teachers to provide numerous environmental education activities throughout the school year. A Green Team offered students, parents, and teachers special opportunities to work on more in-depth projects. The School Forest projects continue to include planting and landscaping projects on the school grounds.
Please take a look at our original School Forest Web Page.
Parkview was one of the first schools on the web as a result of the School Forest project. Steve Lyme, a forestry graduate student, developed Parkview's first web site back in 1994. The U of M's Forestry School actually hosted the page on their web server. We have heard that Steve has gone on to be webmaster for Minnesota's Department of Natural Resources.
