Keeping Kids Safe at the Bus Stops

Safety starts at the bus stop. Your child should be at the bus stop 5 minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. All children at the stop should wait for the bus in a safe location like a driveway or sidewalk.  They should remain away from the road until the bus is completely stopped. In the winter, please remind your child that it is unsafe to climb snow banks when waiting for or leaving a bus.

Drivers report student discipline and safety issues to the school. School staff address these issues directly with the student or students involved. The School Bus Transportation Policy 732P and Bus Behavior Regulation 732R-2 outline the guidelines students are to follow on the bus and the process staff are to use in dealing with violators.

As the school year gets underway, we adjust pick-up times for routes that are running consistently late. Elementary school students are given notes to take home when their bus times change. Secondary students should listen to school announcements and check updated bus schedules posted in their building. There may be a delay in making schedule changes to bus stops as we work to get routes running on time.

Winter weather can cause delays, and your patience is appreciated as we adjust for road conditions during these times.

Families may purchase bus service for their children who do not receive free transportation under state guidelines. Those eligible for fee-based service are students in grades 7-12 who:

• Live 1-2 miles from their school's attendance area
• Live less than 1 mile from school but were previously in the busing area
• Attend school through open enrollment or non-resident agreement (non-resident students must ride from existing bus stops)

Register Online or by Mail

When registering online(only Visa/Master Card accepted), you do not need to mail in any registration or agreement forms to the District Transportation Office. Parents/guardians using the system for the first time will need to create an account. You will need to enter the Synergy Student ID of your student to register when using it for the first time.

If you plan to mail in your transportation registration materials, download the Transportation Contract and any other transportation forms you may need. Please mail to Roseville Area Schools Transportation Office, 1251 County Road B2 West, Roseville, MN 55113.

Payment

The fee is $200. Students who qualify for reduced-cost school lunch can make a lump-sum payment of $60. There is a maximum fee of $300 per family for full-year service. The maximum charge is $90 for families who qualify for free or reduced-cost meals.

Why is there a fee for transporting student who live under 2 miles?

State Law (MN Statute 123B.88) requires school districts to provide free transportation to all students living two miles or more from the school they attend. Because state funding is not provided to transport students living two miles or less from school, Roseville Area Schools implemented a transportation fee for students in secondary grades 7-12 who live less than two miles from the school they attend.  Students who live within two miles of school will have the following options:

• Walking to school
• Receiving a ride from a parent or guardian
• Driving themselves
• Car-pooling
• Paying a fee to ride the school bus (The fee will be waived for students who have a documented disability that requires bus transportation or for families meeting the qualifying income levels.)

The fee for a student to ride the bus to school will be $200 per year. There is a family limit of $300 per year. Students who qualify for free or reduced lunch will also qualify for free or reduced transportation fees. The transportation service fees are necessary to offset some of the $5 million expense of providing transportation services to/from the schools.
