The No Child Left Behind act (NCLB) requires Title I schools not meeting their Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) targets for three consecutive years in the same subject to offer Supplemental Educational Services (SES) - Tutoring - to eligible students. Central Park Elementary School and Edgerton Elementary School are currently in this stage of AYP consequence.
This means that students at these schools who receive Free/Reduced Price Lunch assistance and have not transferred to another school under School Choice are eligible for free tutoring from one of the independent providers serving District 623. The first enrollment window opens in November. A second enrollment window, if needed, will open in March. Eligible families will receive a mailing before each enrollment window from the district with information about the program and providers, and a registration form. If more students request SES than funding allows, students who are the lowest achieving eligible students are given priority.
For 2011-12, District 623 has set aside $130,000 of its Title I budget to fund SES. The maximum amount available per eligible participating student is $1037.32.
How do I register my child?
Use the information that is mailed to your home prior to each enrollment window to determine which provider you would like serving your child. Complete the registration form and send it to the district office or drop it off at your child's school. Providers can answer your questions about their services, but they cannot register you directly.
Is this required?
District 623 is required to offer this as an option for your child. You are not required to participate. However, if your child is struggling academically, this may be valuable help in addition to the support he or she is getting in school. You will receive an invitation to participate from the district because your child is eligible, not because he or she needs this service.
