Special Education

Roseville Area Schools provides a full continuum of special education and related services depending on each student's unique special education needs and the goals determined by the student's Individual Education Planning (IEP) team. Services are provided in the least restrictive learning environment which is appropriate for the individual student.

    1. Teachers, students or parents may request a consideration for evaluation to determine the need for special education. Contact your school principal or guidance counselor.

    2. Parents and/or students participate in the referral review process with school staff.

    3. Parent permission is needed for the initial evaluation. The student is evaluated in areas related to the suspected disability.

    4. The results of the evaluation are reviewed by a team of school personnel, the parent/guardian, and/or the student. This team usually includes a school psychologist, a general education teacher, a special education teacher, administrator and others. The full team determines whether or not the student is eligible and in need of special education.

    5. When the team decides that special education is needed, the school team, with parents and/or student, develops an IEP (Individual Education Program) plan. This IEP will include the goals and objectives of the student’s program, types of specialized services that may be needed, the amount of time he or she will spend in general education activities, and the place that services will be provided.

    6. If there is disagreement about the IEP or special education services, school staff, parents and/or student work to develop agreement through mediation, conciliation or a due process hearing.

    7. At progress reporting times and annual IEP review meetings, the student’s progress is reviewed, the IEP is updated, and the student’s placement is discussed. Parents are encouraged to review program goals and make suggestions for changes. Parents or school personnel may request an IEP and placement review at any time.
