LC students worked all year with a literacy program through the Children's Theatre Bridges Program

Posted on May 17, 2018

Bridges is an amazing literacy program through Minneapolis Children's Theatre. Thanks to the LC PTA, private donations from LC family and friends, and the Little Canada REC association, all year our entire fifth grade community came together to work with artists and literacy specialists in both English and Spanish. The work presented by the Children's theater program became a significant additional part of the fifth grade curriculum. The children felt success in telling and creating stories. Our teachers used stories from the program to enhance the literacy curriculum and we saw an increased achievement in literacy MCAs in our fifth grade students. The children created their own plays and had an opportunity to perform them on the Children's Theater stage. The energy was amazing, the community was amazing.

Social Justice paintings created by Mr. Kleemeier's fifth graders.

Posted on April 11, 2018

Mr. Kleemeier's Grade 5 DLI class created some exciting art that is on display in the specialist's hallway.  It started as a small project for Black History Month in February and turned into something bigger.  The students chose an image of a person of color who was actively involved in social justice issues.  Some are from the 1930s like Jesse Owens and some are contemporary like Oprah and Serena Williams.

Rather than make posters, they are in the form of t-shirts hanging on the clothesline.  Please stop by and enjoy these paintings the next time you are in the building.

A free book for every student!

Posted on March 16, 2018

A great thing happened at our school on Friday. Through a partnership between Scholastic Books and the North Suburban Kiwanis club EVERY student received a free book. A first grader came up to me and excitedly said, " We get to keep this book forever!"
